Glorious day at Station Road, 3 points in the bag, worst game I’ve seen in years … but I’ll take it!

Athlone finally got back to winning ways thanks to an own goal from County player Dean Lawrence. With one report giving the goal to Town midfielder David Tyrrell, and another crediting Padraig Moran with his 95th League goal of his career … despite not even being in the match day squad, Athlone Town In Photos can conform
that it was indeed Lawrence who diverted Emeka Onwubikos cross past Kevin Mc Donnell in the County goal.

Injur prone former Town midfielder Davy Byrne started the game for County but was just as effective with them as he was in his stint with Athlone, signalling to the bench with 12 minutes to go that he’d had enough. Daithi Garry, who trialed with Town in preseason was an unused sub for County.

In the Athlone team Thomas McGauley slotted back into centre half with Kevin Dunne retaining his place in midfield, putting in another assured performance while Robbie Benson also returned after recovering from a virus that kept him out of the squad for the Mervue game last week.
