0919 Waterford United v Athlone Town

Friday 19th June 2009 – FAI League of Ireland Division 1
Waterford United 2-1 Athlone Town

As Damien Richardson would say … we were ridden rock solid.
Once again the officials got things wrong and it turned into a disaster. Firstly Stephen Place got sent off for 2 bookings with just over 30 minutes gone, then the Ref waves play on at a stone wall penalty for Athlone, before awarding Waterford a soft enough one on the stroke of half time.

Extra man advantage really showed in the 2nd half with Waterford doubling their lead via an unmarked close range header from a free in. But to Athlones credit they battled on regardless and Kevin Dunne popped up at the back stick to pull one back for Town in injury time. If it had been 10 minutes earlier who knows what would have happened.

Good points from the game though were the debut of new local signing Tom O’Halloran and also the energy and constant running of Gary Murphy when he came on!
